Most Tallahassee trees that are dying from watering aren't dying from too little.
They're dying from too much, applied too often, in the wrong place.
Lawn irrigation systems are designed for grass — shallow-rooted, fast-drying, daily-watered grass. Mature trees aren't grass. The watering pattern that keeps a St. Augustine lawn green will, applied to a live oak, slowly kill it. The ISA Certified Arborist Study Guide covers this in detail. Here's the part that matters.
The Single Most Important Watering Concept
Deep and infrequent beats shallow and daily.
The ISA Study Guide states it plainly: "long-duration irrigations wet the soil deeply and can encourage the development of deeper root systems. Trees with deep root systems tend to be more drought tolerant."
The reverse is also true: shallow, frequent watering keeps soil moisture concentrated in the top inch or two of soil. Roots grow where the water is. You get exactly the root system you train for.
The consequences in a hurricane zone are not theoretical. Shallow-rooted trees fail by uprooting. Deep-rooted trees, by and large, don't. The watering pattern over decades determines which kind your tree becomes.
The Numbers That Matter
A general rule from arborist practice: during a dry stretch, water 5 to 10 gallons per inch of trunk diameter, applied slowly, about once a week. A 6-inch-diameter tree wants 30–60 gallons of water, delivered over an hour or more, not in five minutes.
The point of the slow delivery is infiltration. If you dump 30 gallons on the surface in five minutes, most of it runs off. If you trickle the same 30 gallons over 90 minutes, it soaks 12 inches deep and the entire amount reaches the root zone.
Where to Apply It
The drip line, not the trunk.
The ISA framework is explicit: the fine, absorbing roots of a tree are concentrated under the edge of the canopy — the drip line — not against the trunk. Watering at the base of the trunk:
- Reaches almost none of the absorbing roots
- Wets the lower trunk and root collar continuously, inviting collar rot and Phytophthora
- Does nothing for the tree's actual hydration
A soaker hose laid in a ring out near the drip line, run slowly for an hour, is dramatically more effective than the same amount of water hitting the trunk.
When to Water (and When to Stop)
Per the ISA framework:
- Time of day: evening or early morning. Cooler temperatures mean less evaporation; more water actually infiltrates the soil.
- Frequency during dry stretches: once a week for established trees in normal weather. Daily isn't needed and is often actively harmful.
- Newly planted trees: more frequent watering during the first growing season as the root system establishes, then taper.

- When to stop: when the rain returns. Trees that get watered through a wet spell develop the same root-rot problems as overwatered houseplants.
The Three Soil Moisture States to Know
The ISA Study Guide names three reference points:
- Field capacity — the soil is holding the maximum water gravity will let it hold. Available to roots. The ideal post-rain or post-irrigation state.
- Permanent wilting point — water still in the soil is bound too tightly for roots to extract. The tree wilts and doesn't recover overnight. Damage starts.
- Saturation — every pore is filled with water; oxygen is excluded; roots suffocate.
A healthy watering pattern keeps the tree between field capacity and the wilting point — not at saturation, not below the wilting point.
A leaf wilt that's gone by morning is normal in summer afternoons. A leaf wilt that isn't gone by morning is the wilting point. That's the signal to water.
Why Your Lawn Sprinkler Is Probably Hurting Your Trees
The ISA Study Guide names overirrigation as a growing cause of urban tree decline. In Tallahassee specifically, we see this constantly:
- Daily lawn irrigation zones running through mature tree drip lines. The grass needs the water; the trees don't. Roots stay shallow because soil moisture is constant near the surface. Twenty years later, the tree uproots in a storm.
- Sprinkler heads spraying tree trunks. Continuous wet trunk = collar rot risk.
- Irrigation continuing through Tallahassee's rainy summer. The system is timer-based; nobody adjusts it. Soils stay saturated; roots die; opportunistic root rot moves in.
- Newly planted trees on the lawn schedule. Either too little (lawn schedule doesn't deep-water enough for establishing tree roots) or too much (the establishing tree's root ball stays waterlogged).
If you have an irrigation system, the question worth asking is: does it have a separate zone for trees that runs less often and longer? Most don't. Most lawn-irrigation systems are slowly hurting the trees they were never designed for.
What Works in Tallahassee Specifically
Practical approaches that work here:
- Soaker hose in a ring near the drip line, run slowly for an hour, once a week during dry stretches
- Drip irrigation on a separate tree zone — slow emitters out at the drip line, longer cycles, far less often than the lawn schedule
- Tree watering bags (gator bags) for newly planted trees — they release water slowly into the root ball, which is exactly the right pattern during establishment
- Manual hose at a slow trickle, moved around the drip line over an hour — labor-intensive but effective for one tree
- Basin around the trunk on level ground — built up berm to hold water at the drip line and let it soak in slowly
A 60-Second Test for Your Soil
If you're not sure how much you should be watering, here's the simple version: water the tree as described above, then wait an hour and stick a long screwdriver into the soil 6 inches out from where you watered. If it sinks easily 8–12 inches, you've watered enough. If it stops at 2 inches, you didn't water long enough or the soil is too compacted for the water to penetrate. If it sinks effortlessly all the way to the handle, you've overdone it.
That's it. The whole framework. Most trees that are watered correctly never need a fertilizer visit; most trees that are watered incorrectly don't respond to fertilizer applied to them.
